Help Mr Dhami make his home more wheelchair accessible.

Hello there Coundon Court school here. We are trying to raise money for one of our former teachers Mr Dhami.

On the morning of Sunday 11th June 2023, Mr Dhami who was an experienced cyclist had only been a short while into his regular cycle ride when he became the victim of a serious collision with a car on a local country road.

Mr Dhami sustained catastrophic life-changing injuries. His neck was heavily dislocated, fractured in several places and his spinal cord was damaged. He was treated initially at UHCW Trauma Unit, undergoing major life saving surgery. Mr Dhami spent nine months in hospital (the last 5 months at the Midlands Centre for Spinal Injuries) overcoming many challenges and learning the extent of his injuries and secondary complications. He has altered sensation and reduced motor function to all limbs (tetraplegia) as well as paralysis from the diaphragm and below.

The impact on Mr Dhami and his family has been immense and they are all learning to live in an entirely new way to adapt to his physical limitations and needs to ensure his safety. As a result of the extent of his injuries and loss of physical function, Mr Dhami requires help with most daily living tasks and he can no longer work as a teacher at Coundon Court school.

The emotional and psychological impact of this and the accident have been very challenging for him but through sheer determination he fights through this by doing what he can to maintain his health and by keeping himself active both mentally and physically, subject to his limitations.

For Mr Dhami to be able to live a fuller life and gain greater independence, adaptations to the home are desperately needed.

Mr Dhami is a now full-time wheelchair user and currently he is having to live in the downstairs lounge as his home is not wheelchair accessible.

The home is shared with his wife and three children. The plan for adaptations is to have a wheelchair accessible Floor Through Lift which would allow for Mr Dhami to move upstairs back into his bedroom and to convert the upstairs bathroom into a wheelchair accessible wet room. Currently, Mr Dhami does not have access to any washing facilities downstairs. This would give Mr Dhami much needed dignity, privacy, and sense of normality. It would also help create more family time by freeing up downstairs and it will allow him to accommodate the disabled equipment he requires. The costs of the wheelchair Through Floor Lift and installation is £15,559.

Please donate what you can to help us reach our target and give Mr Dhami the through floor lift that will change his new way of life for the better.
