On May 25th, 2020, George Floyd was murdered at the hands of the Minneapolis Police Department. Since then, a mass movement has taken to the streets to demand justice, not only for George but for the countless others who have lost their lives from police brutality.
Thousands of individuals have flooded the streets, facing the real threat of danger as the police continue to show excessive force in reaction to protesting. Images and videos are plastered everywhere, showing tear gas covered streets, injuries from "non-lethal" weapons, mace. The list goes on.
At this pivotal moment, it is imperative that we as a community come together to provide mental resources for Black organizers and protesters who have been on the ground, some from day one. The trauma endured through the past weeks, on top of the systemic trauma of being a Black person in America, cannot quite be articulated. During this time, we must take care of the Black community. It is not enough to address systemic racism in American police forces, we must address the systemic racism embedded in the healthcare system, where accessibility and long-held racist stereotypes prevail.
I have spoken with a local bookstore, The Irreverent Bookworm, and hope to raise $2700 to purchase bulk quantities of the following books, with an initial order of 25 copies each:
The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma
The Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Workbook: PTSD
The Unapologetic Guide to Black Mental Health
Black Women's Mental Health
My Grandmother's Hands
The invoice shown shows a total of $2,526. I've asked for $2,700 to assist w/ the amount taken out by GoFundMe. All additional $$ will go towards a second distribution or directly to Reclaim the Block.
These books will be distributed throughout different organizing groups, and it is my hope that this fundraiser is ongoing and that more can be purchased for distribution. An itemized invoice is available for confirmation.
Please consider donating or sharing this fundraiser.
“Everyone is familiar with the slogan 'The personal is political' -- not only that what we experience on a personal level has profound political implications, but that our interior lives, our emotional lives are very much informed by ideology. We oftentimes do the work of the state in and through our interior lives. What we often assume belongs most intimately to ourselves and to our emotional life has been produced elsewhere and has been recruited to do the work of racism and repression.”
