Sheilena's Golonka's Story:
My kids and I moved into public housing/ Huntsville Housing Authority in February 2018 after being homeless. I requested a medical transfer because the unit we were initially in had mold, black mold, mildew, and roaches from the lady next door who had a BAD infestation. All of which my 4 year old is allergic to, and can trigger his asthma. On 12/23/2020, my oldest and I moved our furniture to a 2nd unit at Searcy Homes. On 12/24, i woke up with bites all over me. My children had bites also. The Huntsville housing authority (Alabama) moved us into a unit that was infested with bedbugs and mice. There was also a leak coming from the ceiling the first night because it rained. There's a strong mold/ mildew smell in there right now. Management insinuated i brought the bedbugs with me. I've never had bed bugs in 44 years of living. It has been a huge struggle getting any calls returned from the main office. I went down there and was told i couldn't be seen due to covid, and was given the card of the woman who wouldn't return calls. They wanted me to move to a unit at the previous property. It had roaches. Living and dead. We are now in a 3rd unit. 3 places in less than a month. I've not seen any critters, and management has been friendly. As they were at the initial property also. Orkin treated the bedbug unit on 1/7/2021. They looked at my furniture again on 1/21/2021. I've been told to turn that key in today. And i will once i find a way to move my washing machine. I'm not comfortable taking my furniture and the kids' Christmas gifts, as i don't want to deal with this again. I have no idea if they informed the tenant connected to my unit about the bed bugs. They were in the baseboards and around the windows. I've spent over $2,000 on hotel rooms, food, cleaning supplies, bedbug sprays, mouse poison and traps (exposed kids to strong/ poisonous chemicals), laundry, etc, etc. Money of which i wasn't intending to spend on those things. Money that was intended to get my son to New York for college. I'm a single mom. My only family here are my kids. Huntsville housing authority states i cannot be compensated for any damages, even though they're the ones who moved me into an uninhabitable unit. I don't know who to get help from in Huntsville. I've called lawyers' offices and have been told it's pointless to go up against the federal government. Any advice would be appreciated. I asked my oldest if i could share. It's unfortunate that people who are in positions to serve, take advantage of the people they're hired to work for. I'll continue to fight. Wrong is wrong. Right is right. I'd like to rewind to 12/23/2020, and have representatives of HHA move their wives, children, and grandchildren into those conditions. Right before Christmas.
