Moore Family rebuild after house fire & contractor abandoned

My name is Mary Keys and I am Travis Moore's grandmother.

I’m 89 years old, and there isn’t much I can physically do to help anymore. But I’ve been watching my grandson this past year, and it’s been one of the hardest things for me to see.

On March 4th last year, their home caught fire. Like any family, they trusted that things would be taken care of and that they would be able to rebuild and move back home.

But unfortunately, that’s not what happened.

After the demolition and the start of the rebuild, things began to go wrong. Serious issues started showing up in the work being done. Some of the construction was done incorrectly and even caused additional damage to parts of their home.

Instead of fixing the issues, the contractor unexpectedly abandoned the job shortly after Christmas, after taking a large portion of the money, leaving their home essentially a shell.

Since then, Travis has taken it upon himself to try to rebuild their home on his own, with the help of friends and family. I talk to him often, and I know how much he is carrying. They have had to pay for all the windows twice because the contractor installed the wrong sizes, pay to tear out and redo other work that was done incorrectly, and repair damage that occurred in the process. He's had little time to work because he spends his days working on their home to move things forward, all while doing his best to take care of his family.

As his grandmother, it pains me to watch them go through this. They have always been the ones helping others.

It has now been over a year since the fire. Their living expense coverage has run out, and they are paying for a rental while still carrying their mortgage. They’ve even had to use money that was meant to replace their personal belongings just to keep the rebuild going.

It's been especially hard on the kids having their lives turned upside down this past year.
More than anything, I just want to see them back into their home, able to enjoy their lives again and spend time together as a family.

They are finally getting close to the point where insulation and drywall can go in, which will be a big step forward to start making the house feel like a home again.
I know Travis would never ask for help like this, but I don’t have that kind of pride when it comes to my grandson and family.

If you feel led to help in any way, it would mean more than I can put into words.

We are all very grateful for the friends, family, and community who have already stepped in to help.
Thank you for taking the time to read and share their story.
