On 23 February, the National Trust of South Australia made the decision to dissolve the Moonta Branch Committee. Committee members were suspended without procedural fairness, the site was closed, and building locks were changed during one of the busiest periods of the year, the peak tourist season.
This fundraiser has been created to support efforts to have the Moonta Committee reinstated, ensuring the branch can continue to be managed locally, as it has been successfully for over 30 years.
During the five-week closure, key attractions including the train, lolly shop, and museum have remained shut. This has had a significant impact on the branch’s financial position, with ongoing staff costs despite no income. The closure has also reduced visitor numbers, creating a flow-on effect for local businesses who rely on tourism.
Your support will help protect the future of this much-loved community asset and assist in restoring local management.
Any contribution, big or small, is greatly appreciated.
