The Modern Women Organization was founded three years ago as a youth-powered group to focus on stigmatized issues of female hygiene in Arizona. Menstruation and lack of adequate products is an issue not frequently addressed by media outlets and various nonprofit organizations. We aimed to install complimentary sanitary napkin dispensers in schools. We were in the discussion of beginning a pilot program in Chandler schools before the coronavirus lockdown occurred.
Menstruation does not stop for a pandemic and neither are our efforts to combat period stigma.
Today, we are adapting to the situation by distributing the clean and free tampons and pads to disadvantaged populations, especially Native Americans who are most hard hit by the pandemic. Currently, we have already served 2,184 periods in schools, clinics and Native American reservations. The need to meet the needs of the underserved is more necessary than ever, with poor populations having less resources to survive.
