Imagine hunger pangs churning your stomach endlessly as you watch people throw half eaten food in the trash. You’ve bowed your head, humbly approaching a couple of people for their lukewarm leftovers only to receive a condemnatory, blank stare as you watch your only chance to eat plunge into the garbage.  You had a job a few months ago. Your stimulus check had to be used to purchase a car for you and your family to live in. Dinner might be a few honey buns, a big bag of barbeque chips and a $5 box of chicken. The thought of feeding yourself and your tribe anything that could remotely be healthy and healing appears as a mirage in a murky myriad of unresolved issues. What about the person who has enough to buy groceries but lives in one of Atlanta’s many food deserts? Experimenting with a vegan diet sounds far-fetched when the few fruits and vegetables that are within your grasp are swarming with fruit flies. It pales in comparison to some of the more affluent parts of town that are peppered with farmers markets, specialty stores and chain grocery stores. An abundance of organic, non gmo fresh fruits and vegetables would encourage almost anyone to infuse something nourishing into their carts and their diets. Who decided that access to life giving foods are based on an individual's zip code?

Insert Vegan Meals that Heal, Inc. Since December 29, 2019, myself, my mother and my children alongside several beautiful individuals have pushed out 2,826 plant-based plates of love to our community members facing food insecurity. According to the Atlanta Community Food Bank, over an estimated 755,400 people in the metro Atlanta area have no idea where their next meal will be coming from. Typically, when food is given to under-served and or unhoused individuals, the last thing taken into consideration is the direct link between diet and health. Most people are approached with a “Beggars can’t be choosers” mentality and I believe it is up to us as a community to be the change we wish to see. Vegan Meals that Heal, Inc. is asking you to unite as we create a mobile donation-based food truck. Everyone will be able to get a warm meal, ice cold water, fresh fruit and a plentitude of care regardless of what is or is not in their pockets. Our produce will primarily be locally sourced from urban farmers, we will hire a prep cook, expeditor and a chef, and we will create a safe space to continue to serve our community with humility and cruelty free meals.

We are asking for donations to help purchase a food truck and supplies to begin to manifest this dream into a reality. Veganism should be as beautifully presented to our brothers and sisters suffering from food insecurity as it would be to a foodie reviewing a Michelin star restaurant.  I am grateful for each and every individual who stirs the compassion in their heart to lend a helping hand to someone who needs you.
