I was never familiar with motor neuron disease until 2018 when my closest friends: Patrick, Julian, and Jamie Alam had their world changed forever with the discovery that their dad (Angus) was diagnosed with motor neuron disease. What makes this so painful is that no cure has been found to treat this horrendous disease. These boys are my brothers and I consider them family. They are the most respectful, kind, and thoughtful family who continue to provide strength, courage, and loyalty to those around them.

Growing up without a father, it is hard to admit when you have found a father figure who has influenced your directionality when navigating through the ridges of life. Angus, was not only a father figure to me, but also to my brothers. He is a very strong-headed man who continues to respect everyone around him and has been selfless in raising his family.

The purpose of this competition is not only to raise funding for MND, but to bring some of my closet friends together, and to enjoy a day full of passion, excitement and support through lifting! For me, lifting has never been about the numbers, even though I can get caught up in them. It’s about the amazing people I have met along the way, the support we give each other when preparing for competitions, and the genuine nature and kindness of these people: people you can open up to and tell them what’s wrong. This is very hard for people to do today, especially men.

The people competing at this comp have gone through hardship: continuous battles with mental health, harsh breakups and relationship stressors, feeling lost in life, having a family member suffering from a terrible disease. But I want to remind you that on this day, you are not alone! It does not matter what you lift, I just want you guys and girls to enjoy this day and show support to my family. I cannot wait!

This event is for you Angus. Thank you for raising three amazing boys who have always been there for my family, and being a father figure in our lives!
