Dear friends,
As you know in early August ICE agents rounded up 680 workers at food processing plants in Mississippi and took them away on buses to detention centers. Many children came home after school to an empty-or locked house. Now weeks later the families are struggling to pay rent and put food on the table.
Those of you who know me know this strikes close to my heart. (and many others, I'm sure) I want to help. I have teamed up with Jeff Stone and Sarah Ludden to raise money and purchase food and supplies to support these families.
I researched organizations providing direct assistance to the workers and their families and have connected with Jamie Beatty, the Director of Youth and Children's Ministry at First United Methodist Church in Morton, MS (were one of the plants was located), who is coordinating local relief efforts.
Our goal is to raise $3000. and to drive to Morton, MI in November. We will purchase the food and supplies from local stores. With so many workers jobless, many of the local businesses are suffering. So this will both provide food for the families as well as help the local businesses. We'll also stay for a couple of days to volunteer, sorting donations and packing boxes for the families.
Please join us in supporting our brothers and sisters in Mississippi by making a donation.
Thank you in advance for showing solidarity with families in such dire circumstances. We will let you know how much we collect and what we are able to do because of your gift.
Deepest gratitude,
Marti, Jeff & Sarah
