Hi, my name is Lachlan. This year, during our gap year, my cousin, our friend, and I are embarking on a self-funded journey across Central and South America. A key highlight is the opportunity to spend time volunteering with Fundación Trópico in Colombia—an inspiring, community-driven charity dedicated to preserving biodiversity, protecting fragile ecosystems, and supporting local communities through sustainable initiatives. Their work is particularly crucial in this region, which is one of the most important areas in Colombia—and even the world—for biodiversity and bird species. A major focus of their work is helping local people develop eco-tourism initiatives that generate income while protecting the land and culture. By equipping communities with the knowledge and tools to build sustainable businesses, Fundación Trópico provides long-term solutions that balance conservation with economic opportunity.
How You Can Help:
During our time with Fundación Trópico, we will support their efforts by:
• Assisting in developing eco-tourism enterprise ideas
• Helping create social media content, videos, and marketing materials to promote responsible tourism
• Supporting local guides in communicating their conservation efforts and sustainable tourism practices
• Engaging in a valuable exchange of ideas with the organisers, offering an outside perspective to help refine and grow their projects
This cultural exchange with English-speaking visitors is incredibly beneficial to Fundación Trópico, as it provides them with direct insight from an international perspective—helping them develop sustainable tourism that appeals to a global audience.
We are raising funds to cover project related travel expenses to the region which is quite remote, this means hiring a jeep for the larger Fundacion Tropico team. It also includes the creation of a community kitchen where locals will be able to sell their food products that feature local ingredients, and other expenses associated with piloting the touristic route for foreign visitors. Contributions will go directly to Fundación Trópico to support their vital sustainable livelihoods work. Your generosity will not only help us encourage local families learning about eco-tourism, but will also help protect one of the most ecologically important regions on the planet.
