Miqueas 6.8 orphanage project
Donation protected
My name is Lucy Cook I am 19 years old and I will be traveling to Honduras, in the village of La Colorada, 15km from the larger town on El Progresso in Miqueas 6.8 orphanage in January for 8 months leaving in January 2023 until August 2023. The Home is owned and run by Melody and Jacob, a Canadian-American couple who have lived in Honduras for a number of years. They have adopted over 30 children and become their legal guardians. Over the years that Melody and Jacob have lived and run Miqueas 6.8, some of the children have been reintegrated with their biological families. Melody and Jacob are the children’s parents but are assisted by Honduran staff in caring for the children.
My role will be varied but will involve teaching, tutoring and running activities with children all of the children. I will assist in the provision of therapeutic activities for children with special needs and help to organise and maintain a storage area with a range of resources and donations that the home receives. Over the years that Project Trust has worked with Miqueas, the role of the volunteer has evolved as the children get older. My responsibilities will be within education, developing a teacher-student relationship with the children and working to ensure they are achieving the best they can at school. Il help the children in learning to read and completing homework and i will create activities that are tailored to each child, getting to know them well and I will be a positive role model to them, helping them to grow into responsible, confident and positive individuals, within the Honduran culture. There may be many other things I am asked to do- the primary role as a volunteer is to help out in anything that might be beneficial to the Home and the children. There will be a lot of opportunities for activities such as music, art, drama and sport.
Volunteering at Miqueas 6.8 is a rewarding experience but requires that you work hard, independently and efficiently. The Home is an established, functioning family home. I will need to be sensitive to the family environment, creative in my role, patient and energetic in my work with younger children.
It will put me in challenging positions but I am so exited for the experience and to endure the challenge, I will be living in the orphanage, Miqueas 6.8.
