Milwaukee Art Museum Workers Fund

MAM Workers are the heart and soul of the museum. We need your help.

On Tuesday, December 1, the Milwaukee Art Museum began a second round of furloughs in 2020. The first round, from early June, is still ongoing. Many workers furloughed in this second round had already experienced furloughs in June, before MAM reopened to the public in July. With rising COVID-19 cases, the Museum management rightfully decided to close MAM’s doors to keep its staff and the public safe. However, many MAM workers are now without a source of income, right before the holiday season, in the face of end-of-year bills, with increased heating costs due to the upcoming winter. Thus, we are raising funds to support our coworkers.

We are a mutual aid committee formed by the IAM MAM Union. We raising funds to help workers of the Milwaukee Art Museum impacted by COVID-related furloughs, lay-offs, and contract terminations, or who are otherwise in financial hardship.

Anyone employed by the Milwaukee Art Museum who has been affected by furloughs, layoffs, and contract terminations since March of 2020, or who experience other unspecified financial hardships as a result of employment uncertainty is eligible to apply. We believe it is crucial to allow all employees experiencing need to apply for these relief funds. As a community, we will support each other through this austerity.

How You can Help

Support MAM cultural workers by donating. Our initial goal of $7500 would provide $150 grants for 50 of the nearly 90 workers affected by the current MAM furloughs. Your donation will be distributed to workers who have lost their income to help them in this time of widespread need. Grants of $150 each will be distributed on a rolling basis to individuals in the order in which we receive their request and as donations allow. Requesters will be notified automatically when their requests are received and again when their requests have been reviewed. We are committed to a transparent process. While we will update you on grants disbursed on this GoFundMe, all grant recipients will remain anonymous.

Want to do More?

The IAM MAM Mutual Aid Committee is actively seeking collaborators on further initiatives, such as food drives, time banking, and other ways to support our MAM community. To join us, please contact mamioc2020 [at] gmail [dot] com.

We have been inspired to launch this fund by other important initiatives that provide museum worker aid, including the Milwaukee Area Labor Council Labor Relief Fund , Museum Workers Relief Fund run by Museum Workers Speak , and the PMA Impacted Worker Fund . If you are in a position to donate further funds, we hope that you consider contributing to these other museum worker aid funds.

Are You a MAM Worker?

If you are a worker at the Milwaukee Art Museum, or worked there until recently, and you have been furloughed or lost your income, you are eligible to request financial assistance. The form to request assistance can be found here . The MAM Worker Fund will make gifts of $150 in the order the requests are received on a rolling basis, as funding permits. If additional funding becomes available, we may distribute funds to requesters more than once; however, new requests will be given first consideration and we ask that requesters wait two weeks before requesting again. The first round of disbursements will go out in the New Year (January 2021).
