Migrant Metro Cards

Hi! I’m Daniel Bajada, a Life Scout on the Road to Eagle at Troop 662. My Eagle Scout project, "Migrant Metro Cards: Combatting Targeted Surveillance," aims to address the systemic challenges faced by migrants in accessing transportation services, particularly in urban areas.
Transportation is a fundamental need that is often overlooked, yet for many migrants, the cost of commuting via MTA services presents a significant burden. With fares of $2.90 per ride, the expenses quickly accumulate, especially for those commuting multiple times a day on low wages. While student metro cards are provided for children, many migrant mothers, who must accompany their children to school, are left without access to subsidized transportation, leading to fare evasion as a means of survival.
However, the consequences of fare evasion extend beyond mere financial strain. Over-policing in neighborhoods with large Hispanic or African American populations has resulted in disproportionate arrests and heightened surveillance of migrants. The criminalization of minor offenses not only exacerbates the vulnerabilities of Black immigrants but also puts migrants at risk of deportation or hefty fines, further burdening already struggling families.
By providing tangible support to migrants through access to transportation, I aim to empower individuals to pursue better opportunities and advocate for systemic change. Together, let us take a stand against targeted surveillance and injustice, and create a more inclusive and compassionate society for all.
