Amelia had some bruises on her legs, Kyle and I was concerned about. We pretty much talked about new ones popping up each night. We knew Mil had a doctors appointment coming up in October. We decided to wait until then to ask her doctor. As the weeks went by, we noticed they were worse. Well our little ball of fire has had everyone convinced; she is getting them from doing her somersaults and well, uh drop kicks on the floor. She loved to dance and be wild. She jumped, she climbed, she played hard, and was completely fearless. She never cried if she was physically hurt, but cried if friends or sissy hurt her feelings.
Fast forward a couple more weeks;
Kyle and I noticed the bruises started looking like “thumb prints/ finger prints” we had it down to a science of how, if I grabbed Amelia while changing her diaper, it would leave bruises here. We both knew I didn’t grab her that hard. At this point we are wondering if she has something wrong; like maybe she’s anemic.
Allen (PopPop) and Tammie (MeMaw) was dropping things off at the house. I pointed the bruising out to them. Showing them how more apparent they are. Allen asked if they were coming from daycare. I said there’s no way, I know the kids there and that isn’t happening. The next day or maybe two, I decided to go ahead and ask Miss Pam. We both chatted for awhile and she also had noticed they’d been getting worse, in the last month.
Kyle and I decided it was best to go ahead and get an appointment with her pediatrician sooner rather than later. I called and got her in on a Monday. Mils pediatrician took labs, after asking kyle all kinds of questions, (questions we soon found out were related to leukemia.) after answering no to all but one, She decided to draw labs. Just to be safe but wasn’t concerned. Tuesday august 31st at 11:29 am Kyle got a call from her pediatrician, Amelia’s labs came back and her platelets were low and her blast count was high. They were worried about leukemia, Kyle rushed over to my work in a panic. I didn’t know what was wrong but knew I had to leave work. I get to the parking lot and he tells me about Amelia and we have to go straight to children’s mercy. There are two common types of leukemia “ALL” and “AML” after further testing we find out she has “AML” which is harder to treat in most cases, they go on to let us know that she has a rare sub-type of “AML” called acute megakaryoblastic leukemia.
In no way shape or form are we wanting to ask for money. I know lots of people are wanting to help and asking everyone, even our community is asking how can we help. We have had many people asking family members about a go fund me so they can donate directly. It wasn’t easy but was best that it came from kyle and I as we have a caring bridge page that is also linked. You’re more than welcome and encouraged to follow her story there. With Amelia being in the hospital for the long run, we are learning to accept the help. I’m not working right now, as I will now be her full time care giver. The amount of love everyone has shown is unbelievable. We cannot express our gratitude. The donations will solely go into an account for Amelia towards costs of treatments and hospital stays. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.
