Hi, My name is Hailey. I am 23 and I have recently completed my Bachelor of Nursing / Bachelor of Midwifery (Honours) at Monash University. Before I begin my graduate year in May of 2026 as a registered Nurse and Midwife, I have the opportunity to undertake 2 weeks of midwifery volunteering in Iloilo, an island of the Philippines. I am participating in the volunteer program mid Feb 2026 until the beginning of March. This opportunity would allow me to work through areas such as labour and delivery, OBG wards and emergency, antenatal clinic and the 'milk bank'. Volunteering in healthcare has always been a goal of mine as I believe healthcare should be accessible to all. As Australian residents we are extremely privileged to have access to incredible healthcare and unfortunately there are many people that do not. The healthcare system in the Philippines is over exhausted with inadequate staffing and funding, poor resources and access disparities between urban and remote areas of the country. To receive vital healthcare in the Philippines, patients are faced with extremely long waits and delays in treatment, as well as financial burdens due to the out of pocket expenses that many residents cannot afford. Communities in the Philippines are in need of midwifery volunteers in order for the population to have access to safe and equitable maternity care.
