This year for Diwali, myself here at the BT Sales Team has decided i would like to give back to the community and do selfless service (seva) as Diwali is all about triumphing Good over Evil.I believe being able to make a difference for those in need would be a great way to get this message across. The charity we have chosen is, Midland Langar Seva Society (MLSS) is a non-profit organisation that strives to help those in need around the UK and internationally. The UK based charity was established in October 2013 and is registered with the UK Charity Commission. MLSS aim to provide hot meals to vulnerable members of society living in challenging situations such as homeless members of the community and those living on the poverty line as well as children in deprived households. It is built on the foundation of Sikh Ethos ‘VandKeh Shakna’ (Share what you have with others) where help and support is given to all, regardless of social status, race or background.
The Langar or FREE community kitchen is a hallmark of the Sikh faith. It was established by the first Guru of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, around the year of 1481. It is designed to uphold the principle of equality between all people of the world regardless of religion, caste, colour, creed, age, gender, or social status; to eliminate the extreme poverty in the world, and to bring about the birth of “caring communities”. In addition to the ideals of equality, the tradition of Langar expresses the ethics of sharing, community, inclusiveness, and oneness of all humankind. “..the Light of God is in all hearts.” (Guru Granth Sahib, 282)
Langar was started by the 1st Guru of the Sikhs, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
