Michelle McCall & Family; Heroin Addiction and the Covid-19 Pandemic – Some families face a very difficult time and could use our help.

Many communities, including our own communities here in Ohio, have seen a surge in heroin addiction and overdose. Many became addicted to opioid painkillers and then turned to heroin as it flooded the community and became a low-cost substitute for their overprescribed pain medications. Other drugs, such as fentanyl and carfentanil, are also becoming problems because they are even more potent than heroin. Drug addiction is an equal opportunity issue as it affects people of all walks of life. Addiction can happen to anyone, of any background, family structure, profession, or socioeconomic status.

When addiction strikes a family, the results can be devastating. This is particularly true for the children of parents that fall victim to addiction. These children can  not only have their childhood stolen, they can completely miss out on the education and social development required to become fully functional members of society. It then falls to the extended family and the members of the local community to make sure these children get the support and love they need.

One of our own, Michelle McCall, has had addiction, and now the pandemic, greatly impact her own family. Michelle is a caretaker by nature. She has worked in hospitality taking care of guests, including the members at TPC River’s Bend, for many years. As many of you reading this will know, Michelle assumed one of the most challenging caretaking roles possible for a mother and grandmother. After raising her own children, she assumed the role of caring for her grandchildren as well, since their mother was no longer in a position to do so. Peyton, Aaron, Noble, and Haven, ages 1-14, now rely on Michelle, not only to be their grandmother, but also to be their guardian, mother, and father. This alone was extremely couragous and challenging.

Add to this challenge the fact that hospitality industry has been hit hard by the pandemic. Those, like Michelle, that rely on the hospitality industry to make a living, have been hit harder than most. This double-whammy has created a difficult time for the family. Michelle has taken care of many of us through her work in hospitality, it is time someone helped take care of her in her family's time of need. Here is a chance to help someone who has given so much of themselves. As 2020 comes to a close, please consider helping others through a donation that can help a family get through the crisis and emerge in a stronger place in 2021.
