Honoring the Life of Michael Lee Goddard (06/19/1976 – 05/31/2025)

With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Michael Lee Goddard, who departed this life on May 31, 2025, at the age of 48 after a long, courageous battle with Friedreich’s Ataxia—a rare and degenerative neuromuscular disease.

Michael was diagnosed at age 9, after his parents noticed he was struggling with balance. Doctors warned that his life expectancy would likely not extend beyond his twenties. By age 11, Michael could no longer walk, and at 13, he underwent major spinal fusion surgery to allow him to sit upright in a wheelchair. By 24, he lost the use of his arms, and over time, Friedreich’s Ataxia steadily took more: his ability to speak, to see clearly, to hear, and eventually, in his final year, his ability to swallow, requiring the surgical placement of a feeding tube.

Throughout his life, Michael endured with incredible resilience. He faced diabetes, heart disease (requiring an implanted defibrillator), sepsis, and an inoperable kidney stone. Over the years, he spent months in the hospital due to complications. In the end, the disease took his ability to breathe on his own.

Despite all this, Michael never gave up. He remained a symbol of strength, humor, and quiet determination. He deeply loved and was deeply loved.

We are now asking for your help to ease the burden on his family as they navigate this painful loss.

Our goal is to raise $7,500 to cover:
$3,940 in funeral home costs for Michael’s cremation and urn

Light refreshments for approximately 30 guests at a memorial “Celebration of Life” gathering

Support for Michael’s mother, JoAnne, his lifelong caregiver, who selflessly dedicated her life to his care

JoAnne’s home has fallen into disrepair over the past year due to the demands of Michael’s 24/7 care. Additional funds raised beyond immediate expenses will go toward modest home repairs and basic furniture to restore some comfort and stability to her life in this time of grief.

Every donation—no matter the amount—will help us honor Michael’s memory with dignity and provide his mother with the support she now desperately needs.

We are so grateful for your kindness, your prayers, and your generosity. Thank you for standing with us.
