Mia & Bella's Volunteering Trip to Tanzania

In the latter weeks of our summer holidays, we are travelling to Tanzania to teach English to 55 children aged between 3 and 6 years old at the Lemiti Childcare Centre.

Although Tanzania is one of the safest nations on the continent, 45% of its population live below the poverty line, and 3 out of 4 children are deprived in areas such as housing, nutrition, sanitation or education (UNICEF).

Whilst we are in a privileged position where we do not need to fundraise in order to go on the trip, we are raising money to buy essential supplies for the childcare centre and surrounding community, who rely on support from volunteers like ourselves.

The most needed items are toothbrushes and toothpaste, sanitary products, soap, school supplies and non perishable foods such as rice and oil.

For example, just £4 would be enough to feed all 55 children that we will be teaching for one day.

All funds will contribute directly towards purchasing crucial supplies that can really make a difference to many peoples daily life.

Tanzania also struggles, like many other east-African nations, with a teacher shortage.

In 2022, in some rural districts, like the one we are going to, there was a recorded 1 teacher for every 100 pupils.

Both of us are so lucky to have grown up at Ratcliffe, Mia from 3 years old and Bella from 9 years old, and now we would like to give back, and share with the wider world what we have learnt in our time here.
