Like most 17 year old girls, Shelby is a smart, funny, and optimistic high schooler. She has an adoring boyfriend and carries a 4.0 GPA. But Shelby's report cards come from a different kind of school - the California School of the Blind. Since 13, Shelby’s been diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa-Eye Disease (eye disease), Nephronophthisis (Kidney Disease) and Mitochondrial Disease.
Since her diagnosis, Shelby:
- Lost 100% of her vision
- Deals with multiple strokes and brain seizures
- Often requires a wheelchair as she can't walk for very long without feeling sick and weak
- Takes over 40 pills per day
With all odds against her, she could easily be angry, frustrated, or worse - she could have given up. Not Shelby. In fact, that’s what makes her so special. She excels in school, won the Braille Bee twice (blind spelling bee), enjoys life and received a promise ring from her boyfriend Travis on their 2 year anniversary (he is also blind and was born with no eyes.) She intends to finish high school this upcoming year, attend junior college and go to a University so she can work with children like her. What's more, Shelby loves listening to the TV, has a very creative mind and wants to help people. Her favorite TV show is The Ellen Degeneres Show and she’s enjoyed every episode over the last 5 years. Even without her vision, she listens to it daily. If anyone is deserving of a trip of a lifetime it’s Shelby and with your help we can make her biggest dream come true.
Will you help us send Shelby to Los Angeles to attend a taping of Ellen?
