Help the Mendoza Family Rebuild After a Devastating Fire

This is the Mendoza family home—technically considered a historical building, but to us, it holds something even more valuable: generations of family memories, love, and history.

This past year has brought a wave of hardships for the Mendoza family. While the mother of the household was recently hospitalized, her family gathered at home, praying for her recovery. Late one night, as her husband and young nieces slept, a sudden the smell of smoke woke the girls. Rushing through the house, they found their grandfather unconscious. These brave young girls not only saved his life but managed to escape the fire unharmed.

The fire was electrical—originating in this post-war Lustron home—and quickly consumed the area around the family’s devotional table, the very place they used to pray for their mother’s health. Precious family photos, heirlooms, and belongings were lost in the flames. And because of ongoing financial hardship and medical expenses, the family hadn’t been able to keep up with homeowners insurance — leaving them without any coverage.

To make matters more difficult, while the fire was still smoldering, three separate investors approached the family with offers to buy the property. We were still processing the shock and hadn't even found the strength to tell the mother in the hospital. Sadly, many government grants for disaster recovery are only available if no one has made an offer on the property — a cruel irony for a family in crisis.

This family doesn’t want to give up on their home. They want to rebuild — to preserve what they can and stay grounded in the place that has meant so much for so many years. But without insurance, and without qualifying for assistance, their only options are to sell or somehow fund the rebuilding themselves. Selling would be another traumatic loss for a family already overwhelmed with grief, illness, and uncertainty.

We believe this home is salvageable. We believe this family deserves the chance to rebuild and stay rooted in the place they’ve called home for decades.
