For those who’ve followed my journey, you’ll know I’ve been pretty open about my mental health struggles.

January 2022 marked the darkest period of my life. I couldn’t see a way out, my mindset was in a dire state, and I often contemplated not wanting to continue. Every day was a battle, but I kept it hidden behind a brave face.

Thankfully, I found the courage to open up to loved ones, and I truly believe that reaching out for help, changing my lifestyle and talking about how I felt is the reason I’m still here today.

I realized that I was the only one who could change my situation. The phrase “nothing changes if nothing changes” stuck with me so I began focusing on health and fitness as a positive outlet, which completely transformed my mindset and way of life.

Since then, I’ve completed two half marathons, two full marathons, a 33-mile ultramarathon, and dedicated countless hours to self-improvement. This year, I’ve also began therapy, something I’d avoided for years.

These are things my former self would never have believed I’d even try and do.

For a while I’ve felt like I should try and give back to the community and try help other men who are facing similar struggles. My goal is to encourage them to open up and find healthier ways to cope.

On November 30th, the last day of Men’s Mental Health month, I will push myself to the limit to show that we are stronger than our darkest thoughts and that tough times eventually pass.

I’ll start at 4am in the dark of night in Crianlarich, the halfway point of the West Highland Way, and run 63 miles (101 km) into the light, finishing in my hometown of Blantyre. This run aims to raise awareness for men’s mental health.

Opening up saved my life, and I feel that now I’m in a position to try and help others. That’s why I’m supporting the charity Men With Issues. It’s run by people who genuinely care, listen, and provide a safe space where men can speak freely and support each other.

It’s open to anyone who wants to join me, whether for 5k or 50k. Let’s get out, get some miles in, and talk things through.
