Memorial for lives lost at Cynheidre Colliery

We are raising funds for a permanent memorial to honour the miners who lost their lives at Cynheidre Colliery.

This memorial will serve as a lasting tribute to those who worked and died at the colliery, preserving their memory for future generations. Cynheidre played a substantial role in the community and local industry, and it is only fitting that the sacrifices made there are properly recognised.

The memorial will be located in Cynheidre on land owned by the Llanelli and Mynydd Mawr Railway (LMMR) — part of the original colliery site. It will consist of a commemorative wall with an engraved slate plaque listing the names of those who died. The surrounding area will include a small landscaped garden with seating, offering a peaceful space for reflection.

All funds raised will go directly towards materials, construction, and garden features. Any money raised over the target will be held in reserve for ongoing and future maintenance of the memorial.

Hello,

My name is Linda Stonehouse and I am currently involved in fundraising for a memorial in memory of miners who have lost their lives at Cynheidre Colliery. My father was one of the six miners killed on April the 6th 1971. My father was Ieuan Gareth Watkins aged 43yrs when he lost his life to the industry.

It would mean a lot to me, as I’m sure it would for many other families who lost loved ones, to have somewhere to sit and reflect.

I would love to achieve this before I lose my eye sight.
