Mia's Medical Volunteer Trip

Hi!
My name is Mia Santos and I am currently in the 11th grade. I live in Atlanta, Georgia with my two little brothers, great grandma, mom and step dad. I have always had a passion for the medical field and helping others.
At my school I attend biomedical classes and I am in organizations connected to the medical field such as HOSA. When I graduate, I plan to go to med school and later become a forensic pathologist to help people who have been sexually assaulted and abused.
To start getting hands on experience in the medical field, I plan to go to the Dominican Republic this summer for two weeks. I will be working with a program called Gap Medics to travel around the island and help people who do not have the opportunity to get proper medical care.
I chose to go to the Dominican Republic because I am half Dominican and want to help my people have the same opportunities I do and everyone deserves. I also want to learn about my culture and contribute to the community. I plan to bring clothes and other things they need to donate to all the communities I visit over the two weeks.
This will not only benefit me, but it will also benefit the people I help.This experience can be very empowering for me as a young woman, by challenging myself discovering and fulfilling my full potential. I also hope to be an example for other young women. By making this trip happen I will be able to overcome many obstacles and prove there are no limits unless you make them for yourself. This is my first trip but it will not be my last! I hope to go back next summer and volunteer my time. I will be one of the first to graduate college in my family, and I want to take every opportunity I have to be successful and happy.
My goal is to raise 3500 by April 3rd to cover the two week Gap Medics fee, registration fee, getting a passport and a flight out there also to bring stuff to donate to the people I help. All contributions recieved will be put towards my Medical Volunteer Trip and benefiting the country. When girls stand up for girls and others in need they empower each other and together we can transform the world!!
