My name is Oluwatobi Akande. I am a junior biology major at the University of Maryland, College Park with dreams of one day becoming an Emergency Medicine physician.
My desire to serve communities that are generally underserved and overlooked is one of the main reasons I want to become a doctor. During my time at the University of Maryland, this desire has grown tremendously as I have been given the opportunity to volunteer at different homeless shelters and non-profit organizations in the Baltimore and Washington D.C area
These experiences have led me to the Global Medical Brigades, which is an organization that works in rural and under resourced communities who would otherwise have limited to no access to health care. This year’s trip will be to Honduras in South America. During the trip, a clinic will be set up in one of the communities so that medical care can be provided to all who need it. Going on this trip will allow me to work along side medical professionals and other students as we provide health care to the people of Honduras.
The trip will be from August 11th-17th . During this time, I will be interacting with patients, shadowing physicians, and rotating through triage, consultation, dentistry, vision, pharmacy and data informatics. We will also spend some time constructing water systems, digging trenches, and constructing eco-stoves. Overall, the impact we will have on this community will be HUGE. However, the cost of the trip is $1780 so I am seeking help from all my family and friends! Please give whatever you can, no matter how small. As you give, my prayer is that God will bless you with much more.
