Healthcare + Dining Initiative - Interact Rock Bridge High School/Columbia South Rotary
In light of Covid-19 all are impacted by social distancing and the ‘stay-at-home order’ recently mandated by city government. Even before the above order was put into place health care workers were already working long hours to take care of the increasing number of patients into our local hospitals. Many of these health care professionals are accustomed to working long hours, but more recently some are asked to work double shifts.
Another concern is the decreasing business activity experienced by many of our local (home-grown businesses) restaurants. This, of course, is due to social distancing and the fact that many folks are staying home. Many of these are small enterprises who depend greatly on foot traffic and are not accustomed to drive-in or take-out dining although many are quickly adapting.
Hence, we decided to develop a fund which addresses the immediate needs of both groups: healthcare workers and local eateries. To launch our initiative we will first focus on a handful of local restaurants who will receive funds to provide meals to University and Boone Hospitals. We will work with Directors of Dining and Nutrition to facilitate the receipt and distribution of meals to medical staff at each hospital.
The Interact Club at Rock Bridge HS, alongside Columbia Rotary South, wants to support Columbia's community. Such initiatives have been started in communities across the country. Columbia is known for its local support for business, and, in this time of crisis, it's more important than ever to look out for our neighbors. Money raised will go towards supporting restaurants through business while also providing healthcare workers with free meals.
