The ideal outdoor powerchair
Hi all
I'm Kosi (48) and I have Cerebral Palsy. I need to travel in a mobility car when attending appointments at the hospital or visiting the GP. Including my social activities. Family member and carers have to drive me the shops and visit family in other towns. At the moment I have a mobility car which was paid for by a large down payment from the mobility scheme and with a higher rate monthly payment from my PIP.
However the current car need to be returned for another model by the end of August 2026. Which means I have to place a new order in the next couple of months. The mobility scheme renewal is every three years.
The vehicles which would be suitable for me and my elderly mom are available on the mobility scheme but for a premium. It’s frustrating as I may find a suitable vehicle yet it’s either removed from the scheme or its price will increase which is really annoying.
Additional costs have to be met in order to purchase a certain vehicle that: Is right height for us to get in and out of. The inside of the car needs to be wide enough for leg room. Seats have to be comfortable with memory foam to remember our sitting positions.
It also needs a boot which can store two manual chairs, a walking stick, luggage and shopping.
The price range for a suitable vehicle changes quarterly so I can't give a approximate cost. The realistic aim of fundraising would be around £6,000 - £8,000.
Ideally it would make sense to buy a vehicle outright than having to do this every 3 years. With the rising cost of living everything seems to be drifting farther away.
It is impossible for me to pay such a high fee with the benefits that I receive. I struggle with contributing towards household bills, weekly shopping and additional costs for extra equipment or clothing.
I'm also in a desperate need for an outdoor powerchair. The NHS will not provide an outdoor powerchair because I can't use one around the house as our house is narrow with small rooms.. Where am I supposed to get this amount of money?
I don't know how long my current power chair will last because the batteries have been changed twice. The back frame that holds my specialist seat has broken off a few times and the control panel has been replaced just recently. I don't want to be stuck indoors without a powerchair.
I don't often ask for help but when my independences is in a risk of being taken away, I feel I need to seek help from the public. Whatever little or large you can give will be very appreciated.
