One year ago, I started a man circle in Aachen (Germany), which eventually fell apart. What did not fall apart is a special connection that I made unexpectedly, because of this man circle.
It was a 15-year old who wanted (and still) to become a footballer in Ghana. Following multiple injuries, he went online trying to talk to people. Little we both knew, that God would lead him to me, and that I would be so receptive of this unusual connection.
After listening to his story, and showing his X-rays to a doctor I knew in Aachen. I learnt more about modern colonial patterns and how the folks in Africa are kept poor and uneducated. It felt only right, to do a little contribution.
Going down this path, and one full year later, I found myself taking on a caretaking role, which is something I do not regret, not a tiny bit.
As an educator, I know that knowledge is the most powerful thing people can be lured into. So in these 12 months, I have done my best to convince Emmanuel that it was mostly knowledge, that stood between him and the best life he can dream of, for both of himself and his single mom (Emmanuel's dad, who was a professional football player, suddenly got ill and died when he was 5 years old).
Today, Emmanuel is reading the all-time favourite book "Rich Dad Poor Dad", is learning how to touch type on a keyboard, and is already much better at communication, financial management, and many other essential skills.
He is also able to write and edit markdown documents on GitHub, and is currently learning the Linux shell, Office software (LibreOffice) and a bit of graphic design using PhotoGIMP and Inkscape.
Soon, we want him to create and maintain a website for the Ghanian football club which is about to join in a few months. I am also in personal touch with the club owner, who lives in Germany (the same country in which I live).
So why am I sharing all of this with you?
It is because I need something from you, if I was really to continue trying to change the life of this person. Namely, I need stable internet. The internet in Ghana is solely provided via the cellular network, which is really of terrible quality.
Recently. Starlink launched their products in Ghana, which are economical for providers living in first world countries.
I am currently starting a business in Aachen and going through a difficult period monetarily, and even though I am more than capable of supporting Emmanuel and his mom financially until he is able to make his own money (by making websites), it would be difficult for me at this time to get him Satellite internet, which (I believe) would make his learning and my teaching much easier.
This is why I am creating this campaign. To ask you to help me buy the hardware for him, and to pay for the first 12 months of service.
I am confident that after these 12 months, that Emmanuel will be able to make his own money, or that I will be in a better place with my business to continue paying for the Starlink service afterwards.
If you are a technical person and you want to learn more about the process of learning, or if you are an educator and want to understand the method I am using to try to change this person's life, then you are welcome to read this article which I wrote on Medium not too long ago: article on Medium
Cost breakdown (can be confirmed from the Starlink website):
- Hardware: 3,054 Ghana Cedis
- Monthly after that (for 12 months): 770 Ghana Cedis
This approximately translates to 755€ which is the amount I am raising in this campaign. Please do not continue to donate if the limit is reached.
Note that I am already supporting this person and his mother financially, which is not what I am asking for here. I am solely asking you to help me finance the Starlink Satellite internet, for us to be able to have classes more often, and for us to be able to make the most out of these classes.
Thank you all in advance for your love and support.
Please send me some nice words along with your (much-appreciated) hard-earned cash. We all need nice words sometimes.
