MBKU PA C/O 2018 Mission Trip

Donation protected
The Marshall B. Ketchum University, School of Physician Assistant Studies, Class of 2018 (MBKU SPAS Class of 2018)  is currently seeking donations to help fund our second annual mission trip to Tijuana Christian Mission - City of Refuge in Rosarito, Mexico on September 2nd-4th. This Mission accepts children from the Mexican Protective Service, as well as children voluntarily given by their parents. The purpose of the Tijuana Christian Mission is to provide a loving family environment for about 100 children who have seen and experienced abuse, neglect and extreme poverty. In addition to 100 children, there are 20 “parents” that are staff members of the mission to help these kids on a daily basis. Our goal as the Ketchum PA Class of 2018 is to provide these children and parents with medical screenings to help them to live long and healthy lives. The money that we hope to generate from this fundraiser is to provide us with the necessary supplies to do extensive screenings on these children and "parents." Furthermore,  any additional money will be used to get the necessary items for these kids to stay healthy throughout day to day life much after our mission trip is over, such as toothpaste and other personal hygiene items.

This is a unique opportunity to have close interaction with these children and adults. In a typical clinic, time is often limited for Physicians and Physician Assistants to spend educating and counseling their patients on the right life choices to make in order to promote long term health. On this mission trip, the students of the Ketchum PA Class of 2018 and faculty will have extended amounts of time to do thorough examinations of these children. Furthermore, this trip serves two-fold as it will also provide the students of MBKU SPAS Class of 2018 the opportunity to hone our skills as practitioners to better help our future patients.

The MBKU PA program puts an emphasis on patient care and community service, especially in medically underserved locations. At the conclusion of the program, our degree will enable us to practice as direct patient care providers within a number of healthcare settings and help increase the access to medical care for those in need. This mission trip to the Tijuana Christian Mission will teach us to become better practitioners not only by allowing us to better our skills as practitioners, but also to gain greater perspective as to why we all entered the field of medicine by helping those less fortunate than ourselves.
