My daughter Maya was born with Cerebral Palsy. When she was younger, she used a walker, but as she got older was able to walk without it. Just like her Dad she's always been very independent, and strong willed. If you told her she couldn't do it, then she was just more determined to show you she could. She refused to get SSI, and was determined to make her own way in life. She got a job, got her own apartment, and furnished it the way she wanted it furnished. As much as I offered, she would never let me buy her anything unless it was her birthday or Christmas. Well starting last July, she was in so much pain walking, that they had to do reconstructive surgery on both her feet. She lost her job, and apt. Now she's in a wheelchair learning how to walk again. We currently have her in a hotel while im working overseas until I can get back, and find her a place to stay. I had her applied for SSI so she can get some type of income, and amazingly, she was denied. I'm over the moon pissed off. How do you deny someone who was born disabled disability??!!?? I know people who are perfectly fine that get disability, and someone who was born with cerebral palsy, is in a wheelchair, and cannot walk is denied because the doctor says she MIGHT be able to walk again in 6-8 months?!? Are you fucking kidding me?!? So what does she do for the next 6-8 months??? So now I have to pay for a lawyer on top of the hotel? Do I have to go John-Q?!!? Currently my ex, her siblings, and me are holding her down but damn, what if she was on her own? I remember when I was living in Brooklyn, Her and her sister came to visit me one summer, and we were at the Saint Marks Church. St Marks had this big step out front, and I could see her out of the corner of my eye. I knew she was going to take that step, and that was ready to catch her. She took it, and I caught her. As long as I'm around, I won't let her fall.
