Retiree Renovation Rescue


Hello,

My name is Maxine and I need help.  I am 68 years old and I live alone.  I’ve lived alone for the past 7 years ever since I went through a tumultuous divorce with my ex-husband of 37 years.  He moved out leaving me with the mortgage and maintenance of our home.  I’ve barely been managing with only one income until now…

Unbeknownst to me, a faulty line in my refrigerator had a slow leak that went on for months.  This caused severe damage to my wood floors and eventually leaked through the floor down into the basement ceiling, walls and floors.  Mold developed over that time and I had to have my kitchen and dining room floors gutted, my basement ceiling, floors and walls removed and my kitchen cabinets, stove and sink taken out.

I contacted my homeowners insurance and was told that the renovations will not be covered because the leak didn’t come from a pipe in the home, but rather from an appliance.  I was DEVASTATED!!!  I cannot afford the $30,000 plus cost of the renovations and may have to put my hopes of retirement on hold.  The cost of removing the mold has already drained me financially.

I raised my 3 children in this home.  It has been the only home I’ve known for the past 45 years and means more to me than I can express. I am generally an excellent steward of my finances, but due to my divorce my financial situation has changed significantly.  I am solely responsible for my mortgage and home maintenance, along with my increasing health care costs.  I can’t imagine having to extend retirement any further and am heartbroken by this recent catastrophe.  Anyone who knows me knows it is extremely difficult for me to ask for aid, but I’m in need of HELP!
