Mauritanian refugees and asylum seekers
Donation protected
Hi,
In recent months, the Mauritanian community has seen an influx of refugees and asylum seekers. Help pay for basic needs (rent, bills, groceries). The people who apply for asylum will be allowed to apply for work permits, but that will take several months. Until then, they will need financial support.
A Little History of Mauritania
Mauritania is a country located in Northwest Africa that has a population of about 4.6 million people. The demographics of the country consist of the Haratin, Arab-Berber (Beidane), Fulani, Wolof, and Soninke people.
Mauritania has a long history of injustices and discrimination against its Black citizens. In the late 80s and into the 1990s, many Black Mauritanians were forcibly removed from their homes and sent to neighboring countries of Senegal and Mali. During these events, Black Mauritanians were subject to rapes, torture, imprisonment, and even death.
As a result, thousands have fled the country in fear of persecution and the current state of racism in the country. In 2023, many Mauritanians entered the United States to escape an unjust system that continues to oppress its Black citizens.
We are creating this fund to provide the necessary support to those who have arrived in the state of Ohio. If you are unable to donate clothing, food, or other items, please consider a monetary donation to help supply these items.
Thank you,
The Mauritanian Community of Ohio
