Hi, my name is Una Stephens and I’m a final year Human Nutrition student in University College Dublin.
This June, I will be traveling to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to volunteer in the Matumaini Rehab Programme with UCD Volunteers Overseas and the Holy Union Sisters*. Along with a team of volunteers from various disciplines - including nutrition, health & physiotherapy - and a clinical tutor, I will help run a four-week rehabilitation camp at the Matumaini Centre for children with disabilities and their guardians. The Matumaini Centre is a centre for children with disabilities - offering rehabilitation, education, nutrition and livelihoods support. The centre is envisioned as a place where mothers and carers can come with their children and be given help, advice, respite and encouragement.
Each volunteer is asked to raise a minimum of €1,550 - the majority of these funds will go directly to UCDVO’s overseas partners and contribute to their development programmes. The funds raised will be allocated as follows:
● Partner programmes and project costs (including accommodation, local
transport, food, water etc.): €1,450
● UCDVO programme administration (overseas travel insurance, health and
safety, monitoring and evaluation): €100
These funds do not cover flights and other individual costs such as vaccinations. These will be self-funded.
Thank you so much for your support—it really makes a difference. Your generosity allows us to continue this important work and bring about positive change for children with disabilities and their families. I am deeply thankful for your kindness and belief in this programme!
*The Holy Union is a congregation of sisters from Tanzania, Kenya and Europe providing essential health and education services to local communities. The Sisters run the Matumaini Centre, a registered NGO, in an underprivileged district of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
