About Me
Hello! My name is Matthew McClintic, a Life Scout in Troop 364 of Coopersburg, PA. Currently, I am working toward my Eagle Scout rank, and I am in the midst of planning my Eagle Scout Project. Boy Scouts has created my passion for fitness and the outdoors, the key factors in the making of my project. Ever since I earned the Personal Fitness merit badge and began doing sports in school, exercise has had a huge impact on my lifestyle due to its importance in relieving stress and maintaining a healthy body. That said, my dedication to exercising remains, and I am determined to maintain my efforts in keeping myself physically fit. With the introduction of scouting from a young age, the outdoors has also become valuable to me through the various camping trips and hikes in which my troop participated. Between these two aspects of my life, I would like to encourage fitness and spending time outdoors with my community.
My Project and Goal
My Eagle Scout Project will consist of planning and installing an outdoor fitness system in an open area of Upper Saucon Community Park. This compact structure (model #1168) is manufactured from galvanized steel and synthetic materials by a company called StayFit Systems. It provides six different calisthenic exercises, including push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, stretches, knee-lifts, and tricep-dips, in a 16-foot by 24-foot safety zone. With the help of fellow Troop 364 scouts, friends, and family members, we plan to assemble the pieces of the purchased equipment using the provided hardware and secure the six support posts in the ground with concrete footers. After construction, plastic playground borders will be laid around the 80-foot perimeter of the project and 9 inches of certified wood chips compacted in the safety zone, acting as an extra precaution if anyone falls from an elevated position.
The fitness system is designed to serve teens and adults from the Upper Saucon Township and neighboring communities. I intend to provide an opportunity for community members to enjoy the outdoors while still working to achieve their own fitness goals. Runners, bikers, and general users of the Saucon Rail Trail benefit because my project is conveniently located next to the trail and would potentially provide a well-rounded workout routine with cardio and calisthenics. The outdoor fitness system, unlike standard gyms, will be free for anyone to use, creating a more accessible exercise option for people that do not have the money or time to invest in a gym membership. The additional park facilities that my project implements might also attract greater amounts of people to the park, thus stimulating a healthy and developing community. The project not only improves a popular park (Upper Saucon Community Park) but also satisfies the ideas of a large group of community members that believe a fitness-related structure or more recreational areas should be implemented, according to the recently distributed CROSP survey in Upper Saucon Township.
As you can tell by the cost below, fundraising will be a crucial part of my project’s success. Other than creating a campaign page on GoFundMe.com, I will also be asking for donations from local clubs, Rotarians, and businesses, if they agree not to advertise their name and information on my project to avoid competition between townships. Planning other fundraising events like a 5k Race, trail mix drive, and car wash might come into question depending on how successful I am with crowdfunding and the discretion of Minsi Trails Council. Anyone is welcome to donate either by writing a check made out to Boy Scout Troop 364 and specifying Project Account in the memo or selecting your preferred payment method when contributing to my campaign page on GoFundMe.com.
