Matthew Rodriguez Transporation

Donation protected
Mathew Rodriguez is a 6th-grade student this year.  He was involved in a serious automobile accident on October 21, 2019, while walking to school and crossed Franklin Boulevard.   Matthew has 3 sisters at Franklin High School.  Matthew was in the hospital until May 6, 2020, where he underwent extensive surgeries and treatment.  He was in ICU for an extended period of time while he was treated for infections in his brain. Even when doctors told the family that the chances of Matthew surviving were very slim, he never gave up and kept fighting to get better.  With the help of the Franklin Community with thoughts and prayers, the Doctors and staff at RWJ/Barnabas Hospital Matthew went home on May 6, 2020.  He is still wheelchair-bound and continuing to make great progress on his road to recovery while attending physical therapy and occupational therapy.

The family has been taking care of Matthew at home and assisting with his therapy. Dad is working to help support the family and takes care of Matthew in the evening so that his wife can go to work.  They continue to battle with the insurance company on a regular basis over medical bills, costs to modify the home to accommodate Matthew as well as transportation to and from doctor visits and therapy.  In fact, it has become more difficult to transport Matthew back and forth to his visits because of the pandemic and backlog of other patients.  Ambulance transportation is becoming more and more difficult to secure. As a result, the family has to constantly reschedule medical appointments because the transportation arrives late or cancels at the last minute.

Currently, the family is looking to purchase their own van with wheelchair accessibility so that they can transport Matthew to his appointments on their own without having to rely on the ambulance service who is usually late and makes him miss his appointments which later need to be rescheduled.  The problem is that when appointments are rescheduled, Matthew waits several weeks before getting back on the calendar.  A used van would be sufficient as long as it has the wheelchair ramp and this is their plan.

The family will be grateful for any contributions that are made for this vehicle.
