It is with broken hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Matthew Spencer Lewis on June 24th at the age of 38. Matt grew up in Lyme, CT and attended Lyme-Old Lyme High School graduating in 2001. At the age of seventeen Matt began apprenticing to become a farrier under the guidance of Tim Kriz of Bethany, CT. In 2003 Matt purchased his first shoeing body and opened Lewis Horseshoeing. His ambition and drive led to an incredible eighteen years of success. Matt married his wife Caitlyn in 2013 and purchased a farm in Colchester a dream they had since the day they met. A few years later they welcomed into the world two beautiful boys, Stetson William Lewis in 2017 and Waylon Edward Lewis in 2019. Matt was man always in motion with many projects on the farm. He loved working with the boys in the tractor mowing fields, cutting trails through the woods, planting gardens and building anything the boys asked him to. He loved driving horses, fishing with Stetson and drinking chocolate milk with Waylon. He had such a vision of his families future and was currently building a post and beam barn from lumber he logged off the farm. He was such a kind and gentle soul, anyone who met him became a friend. Matt was an incredibly devoted father and husband. He loved his family deeply and the life he created with them.

Matt is survived by his wife Caitlyn, his sons Stetson William Lewis and Waylon Edward Lewis. In addition Matt leaves his parents Robert and Beverly Lewis of Niantic. His sisters Lauren Henry and partner Roland Sonnenberg of Oregon, Jennifer Goltsberg and husband Vitaly Goltsberg of Massachusetts and their children Liam and Mark and Kate Robinson and husband Kevin Robinson of Niantic and their children Mya and Abby. Matt’s wife is comforted by her parents Edward Zatursky and Debra Parkinson of Killingworth and her sister Emily Keifer and husband Adam Keifer of Moodus and their children Vienna, Briella and Presley.

There will be calling hours at the Thomas Neilan & Sons Funeral home Thursday July 1st at 48 Grand Street Niantic, CT from 5-7pm. A private service for family will be held Friday.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Matt Lewis’ Childrens Fund at Liberty Bank
