Matt Koeman Beloved Nerdfighter

"What is a Nerdfighter? A Nerdfighter is a person who instead of being made out of, like, bones and skin and tissue, is made entirely of awesome."
—Hank and John Green, defining what a Nerdfighter is (2009)
Matt Koeman... I cannot begin to summarize what kind of man Matt was or how much he meant to his family and friends. Describing him and the gaping hole his passing has left in the lives of those who knew and loved him is the hardest thing I have ever tried to do. If he was here with me right now he'd be cheering me on saying something like, "You got this! I believe in you!" Then he'd joke that it would be easier on a Google device.
He was a fiercely loyal friend who always encouraged you to see the positives in a situation, but I'm sorry, Matt, as far as your family and friends are concerned your absence most definitely contributes to "World Suck." ("World Suck" is another word included in the Nerdfighter vocabulary, which refers to unfavorable things that occur in the world.)
Matt was diagnosed with appendix cancer in December of 2018. After months of chemotherapy and two brutally invasive surgeries, he endured an incredible amount of pain. Despite this, his compassion and kindness toward others never wavered. He was open, honest, and considerate to a fault... never wanting to burden others with his pain or worries... but you were never a burden, Matt. On the contrary, you were an incredible human being who brightened every life you touched.
Matt would not have been the man he was without his beautiful wife, Kate, and their amazing son, Max, by his side. Kate is eight months pregnant, and while no amount of money will cushion the blow of losing so great a man, as Matt Koeman was, right before their next child is born... I can think of no greater way to honor his memory than to do all that I can to support his wonderful family.
