It’s hard to put into words how heartbreaking it is to see someone you love find out everything they have worked so hard for their entire life has been stolen from them.
My younger brother and his eight year old daughter were in town for Thanksgiving when he got a call from the Lumberton Police Department last night informing him that his house was broken into. The horrible people who did this took everything of value that he owned, including Christmas presents hidden in a closet which he had already purchased for his daughter. To make things worse, my brother has unfortunately been struggling lately and now with this, has to start all over.
After getting over the initial shock, I watched hopelessly as my baby brother broke down in tears, knowing complete strangers have been through his most personal space and torn it apart, realizing he has absolutely nothing to go home to and now has to find another way to make this Christmas special for his beautiful daughter.
If you ask anyone who knows my brother, they will tell you he is one of the most genuine people you will ever meet. He has never met a stranger and has always committed his life to helping those in need any way he can.
Had it not been for an unfortunate back injury many years ago, he would still be on the Lumberton Fire Department, keeping us all on pins and needles every time we knew he was out on a call, risking his life for others. He has never let that take him away from what his heart calls him to do though.
Outside of everything he did while a fireman, he has also organized efforts to collect supplies for those who were affected by the devastating hurricanes, Matthew and Florence; as well as go in boats and distribute them to people who could not get out and, in many cases, had to help rescue them (and many pets) because their homes were no longer safe to be in. There was an incident where he helped pull a woman from her car after a horrible crash on the interstate and, even recently, turned around and waited for police to arrive, when he saw a four year-old little girl walking down a major highway by herself, to make sure she got back to her parents safely. I really could go on and on about the size of this guy’s heart.
Even though he is my little brother, I look up to him in so many ways. If I was able to make this right for him, I would do it in a heartbeat. I know this season, there are a lot of things we all have to budget for, but if you can please take a moment and possibly donate to help him make his home a home again, my family would be eternally grateful.
Thank you so very much and Happy Holidays
