My journey with the Bulamu Access Foundation
The year 2024, when I was in between jobs, was a great time for self reflection and a time in which I realised how privileged I am growing up in a first world country despite the fact that I was temporarily unemployed.
That realization inspired me to make the most of my time off and contribute to a worthwhile cause, not just financially but also by helping people in need.
In September that year I flew to Uganda to support the Bulamu Access Foundation, which is a foundation committed to women's health. I have selected this cause partially because of the great work they do, the passion I saw in their team of volunteers, but also because I could guarantee that every single Dollar donated would be spent to the cause it was given for. No overhead costs were involved.
This organization has done excellent work in educating schoolgirls about the risks of HIV/AIDS and teen pregnancies (School Health Projects) and assisting pregnant women and new moms (Community Maternal Health Projects). All of their work is based on charity and fundraising.
I supported and personally financed one of each of these projects.
The School Health Project targeted 500 schoolgirls who were educated and tested for HIV/AIDS, as well as informed about the dangers of unprotected sexual activity. Uganda ranks fifth among countries with the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence. All of these girls were also given reusable sanitary pads, standard hygiene in our world but scarce to find, and unaffordable for most, in Uganda.
The Community Health Project reached around 300 women in a United Nations Refugee Settlement at the border with war torn Democratic Republic of congo, who were all tested for HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, Syphilis, and Malaria. They also received a Mama Kit, containing all materials for a hygienic home delivery which helped the expecting mothers to establish a safe environment for their babies. Every year, over 6.000 women and adolescent girls in Uganda die as a result of preventable pregnancy and childbirth complications.
Both projects provided medicine and counseling to girls and women who test positive for any of these diseases.
With the help of friends and family I raised 8.000 Euros to execute both projects.
I didn’t expect the level of impact I was able to make and the attention this would create. At the end of the week on the ground we were invited to the office of the Vice President of Uganda, who expressed his gratitude for the impact I was able to make with a great team of volunteers.
I decided to stay on and accepted the role as Advisory Board Member for the foundation and returned this year in March (International Women’s Day) to execute another two projects. This year the impact was even bigger as I managed to get corporate donations from Omron in the form of a variety a badly needed medical supplies such as blood pressure machines and from Vave Health who donated two state of the art mobile ultrasound machines. These were handed over to the foundation in the presence of Uganda’s Minister of Health.
In March 2026 I will return to Uganda for a SHARE Project (School Health Project) in the Kampala area and for a COMAH Project (Community Maternal Health Project) in another United Nations Refugee Settlement, this time in the North of the country. Omron has pro actively reached out to me recently and offered support with more materials needed by the foundation and I have also been able to secure more ultrasound units, this time from Clarius.
To execute both projects I need another 9.000 Euro. I will travel with a good friend of mine in March and we have guaranteed the funds to execute both projects as we are both passionate about the cause. The funds will be used for medication, local transportation, testing materials, medical items, doctors, nurses and ultrasound technicians.
This year I am reaching out to a small targeted audience with the purpose of seeking financial donations to help me bear the costs of these projects.
I am speaking to your hearts and hope you would be willing to make a donation towards this great cause.
Thank you!
