Maryla came to the ER in Greenville, NC on Tuesday, March 19. She was limp, not responding, vomiting and feverish. The staff took her straight back to a room and starting working on her. There were so many doctors and nurses all around. She had 2 seizures while they were assessing her and a left side gaze. They rushed her to CT and did a spinal tap.  Thanks goodness her CT was clear of any bleeding. Her spinal tap came back positive for bacterial meningitis and later we found out she has Group B Strep bacteria. She also has a bacteria growing in her blood and a respiratory infection. She has been placed on many antibiotics. The one antibiotic that she needs has to be done in a Picc line which she can’t have till the infection in her blood stream is completely low or  negative. Once that is in place the antibiotic she has to have will take 21 days of a hospital stay.  Last night she threw up her 1/2 her bottle of 2 ounces, spiked another fever and her soft spot was bulging.   They did a stat CT and blood work on her. The CT shows an abscess to the right subdural of the brain. The pediatric Nuro and Chief of Nuro said she didn’t need surgery right away as of now but it could change at any time. She is now intubated and waiting for an MRI to see more details of her brain. They have said she will have surgery sometime to remove the abscess it’s a matter of when. The MRI will give us more details to that. When they get the results from it then they will decide if and/ or when they will remove the tube. She is also getting a central line while down for the MRI due to her veins collapsing. We are praying for no long term effects or damage from the bacterial meningitis.
