Helping vulnerable children and elders in Ethiopia
Donation protected
The Ethiopian-Eritrean Student Association at Virginia Tech is raising funds for Mary Joy Development Association, a non-governmental organization working to empower vulnerable community groups like children (with particular emphasis on orphans), elderly living in poverty, and people living with HIV/AIDS.
The Mary Joy Development Association has helped over 1.5 million people directly and indirectly since it was founded by Sister Zebider Zewdie 25 years ago.
They are currently helping 35,000 kids and 4,000 elders across 4 coordination offices and 9 satellite offices in Ethiopia. The funds raised will provide food, clothing, and books to children and elders at the Mary Joy Development Association in Ethiopia.
Helping impoverished children is a common way of giving back throughout the world. They are the future of the country with minds eager to learn and make a difference. In Ethiopian culture, our elders play an important and irreplaceable role too. They are the storytellers, caretakers and our source of wisdom. With hopes that their children can have a better future, they make countless sacrifices and have spent their lives working until old age.
We may all come from different families and backgrounds but one thing remains true for all: no elder or child should suffer the effects of poverty. Our mothers and fathers are living symbols of our past and our children are the hope for our future. We must act now, in the present, to support those who need us the most.
Ethiopia is rich in many ways: our culture, our people, and our hospitality; but we must not forget those who are left in the shadows.
Any donation amount is appreciated! We thank you from our hearts in advance.
If you would like to personally sponsor a child OR an elder, please complete the form on the Mary Joy website at http://maryjoy-ethiopia.org/form.pdf. It only costs 360 birr (~$15 USD) per month to provide the support a child or an elder may desperately need.
