Martyn’s journey back to mobility

Donation protected
Hi, I’m Allie – and this is for my incredible Dad, Martyn.

In September 2025, everything changed. My Mum, Brother, and I rushed to Barcelona after hearing that Dad had been in a serious cycling accident. When we arrived, we were hit with devastating news: Dad had severed his spinal cord. He was lucky to be alive, but we were told he would never walk again.

From that moment on, life was completely turned upside down.

Dad has shown unbelievable strength and courage. Every single day since has been a battle — physically and emotionally — and yet he keeps showing up, pushing forward, and adjusting to a whole new way of life. Mum, too, has been an absolute rock. This happened to her as well, and their world has changed forever.

The road to recovery has been long and incredibly tough — getting Dad safely back to the UK, into the right hospital, and eventually the specialist rehab centre he needed. But he’s made it. He’s home now and doing so well. We’re not surprised, of course — we always believed in him. And while he’s exceeded the expectations of medical teams, to us, he’s just being Dad: determined, resilient, and full of life.

The grandkids call him “Hot Wheels” now — a name he wears with pride!

But even now, nine months later, every day presents new challenges. Simple things — going out for coffee, visiting a friend’s house, even just getting out of bed — all require huge effort, planning, and the right equipment. If you’ve never had to think about the world from a wheelchair, I can tell you — it’s eye-opening.

Mum and Dad have already spent their life savings adapting the house so Dad can live independently. They’ve done this with no financial help, and the costs have been enormous. We’re incredibly lucky they could do it — but there’s still so much Dad needs to maintain his health, mobility, and independence:
• A car he can adapt so he doesn’t have to rely on Mum
• An electric wheelchair so he can get out and about
• Home gym equipment to keep him strong and healthy…..

These things aren’t luxuries — they’re lifelines. That’s why, with a bit of encouragement from friends and family, I’ve decided to set up this GoFundMe page — to help Dad take the next steps forward.

To everyone who’s already supported Dad over these past months — thank you. Your kindness and encouragement have meant the world to us and helped carry Dad through the hardest time in his life. There is absolutely no expectation for anyone to give — but if you are in a position to help, we’d be so grateful.

And if nothing else, we hope this message reaches you as a heartfelt thank you from our family.

We’ve added some photos of Dad’s journey so far — they’re a bit emotional, but they’re real. This is his story, and we’re still writing it. Thank you for being a part of it. ❤️

With love,
Allie
