This year I’ve signed myself up for the Plymouth 10K. Those that know me know I’m the furthest thing from a runner, so it’s going to be a proper challenge, doing something that isn’t quite me, but with a really positive impact.
Last year, I was also not quite myself… but in a very different way. I was in a bad place - fighting demons in my head, turning to drink most days, hardly sleeping, burnt out and suicidal.
So what’s this got to do with running a 10K?
Well, I reached out to a charity who helped me source counselling and get myself into a better place, because I wasn’t ready to give up that fight. That’s why I’m raising money for Marsden Therapy Hub, so they can keep doing the fantastic work they do and help others facing the same battles I was just 12 months ago.
You never know what others are going through, so check in on your mates, because I’m sure you’d rather listen to their worries than their eulogy.
And if you ever find yourself in a similar position, please speak out. Whether it’s your mum, your dad, your Aunty Karen, your best mate, the neighbour, or the Samaritans; people will be there to listen.
I speak from first-hand experience when I say I know how scary and tough it feels to speak out - but also when I say it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. Just one conversation lifted so much weight off my shoulders, and I finally had the support to get myself help, which I’ll forever be grateful for
