Revd Mark's Sabbatical to India 2024

Journey to South India: Uncovering the Legacy of St. Thomas

A Pilgrimage for Knowledge and Inspiration

For centuries, the story of St. Thomas, the Apostle who brought Christianity to India, has captivated hearts and minds. As a Parish Priest serving in Suffolk, England, I have long been drawn to this enigmatic figure and his enduring impact on the region. Now, I have a unique opportunity to embark on a sabbatical pilgrimage to South India, and I humbly seek your support to make this dream a reality.

Unearthing the Past, Deepening Faith

After 10 years of ministry, a Priest is able to take an extended period of study leave for 3 months, to enable them to have a period of Spiritual Refreshment, Physical Rest, and Theological Study. I have been granted this time from September 2024 through to November 2024.

My sabbatical will be centred around exploring the historical and spiritual footprints of St. Thomas in South India. I will visit ancient churches, delve into sacred texts, and engage in meaningful dialogue with local communities. By immersing myself in the cultural and religious landscape, I hope to gain a deeper understanding of St. Thomas's life, mission, and the legacy he left behind.

Sharing Knowledge, Inspiring Others

This sabbatical experience will not be solely for personal enrichment. I plan to document my learnings and reflections, as well as giving presentations upon my return. This will allow me to share the insights I gain with my congregation, fellow clergy, and the wider community, fostering a deeper appreciation for St. Thomas and his enduring significance.

Your Contribution Makes a Difference

The funds raised through this GoFundMe campaign will go towards covering the essential expenses of my sabbatical journey, including travel, accommodation, research materials, and cultural experiences, which I estimate will be approximately £4,750. Whilst grants will cover some of this cost, I also need to fund £3,000 myself. I hope that with your generous support, I can embark on this enriching pilgrimage and bring back valuable knowledge and inspiration to share with our community.

Together, we can illuminate the legacy of St. Thomas and bridge the gap between cultures and faiths. Please consider donating and becoming part of this meaningful journey.

Thank you for your support!
