Save Mariposas Rebeldes!

UPDATED July 11th:

Mariposas Rebeldes is a gardening initiative on Muscogee (Creek) and Cherokee Territory, in so-called Atlanta. For the past few months, we have been organizing based on principles of mutual aid and food autonomy in order to facilitate agricultural education and the sharing of resources among the queer Latinx community. Now, we have an opportunity to take the land back from the owner of the property, who is selling it in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mariposas Rebeldes is fundamentally opposed to hierarchy between its participants and seeks to establish an egalitarian model of community gardening. Here, a diverse Latinx community intersected with Black, Trans, Queer, and Indigenous identities is growing much-needed food and medicine, sharing skills and material resources, and organizing around each member’s interests and pressing needs. We reject the contemporary model of charity and believe that everyone involved in this project should be empowered to lead.

With an enormous amount of help from the community, we have planted several vegetables and medicinal herbs in raised beds. We have started a 3 sisters (corn, beans, and squash) garden. This is an example of a pre-colonial Mesoamerican companion planting technique that has been practiced by the Muscogee (Creek) and Cherokee since long before the arrival of European settlers and the forced migration of indigenous peoples. We have organized a series of mushroom cultivation and foraging workshops. We are planning many more workshops around fermentation, herbal medicine, first aid, and community care. We want to host community events such as film screenings and potlucks. The hope is that this space will allow people to experiment with both agricultural techniques and community organizing.

Your donation will go towards purchasing the property from the owner. Since he wants to sell it quickly, we have a limited amount of time to raise funds. In the event that we do not raise enough money, your donation will be used to find another space for Mariposas Rebeldes to exist.

Thank you for your help. We have been inspired by the amount of support we've already received, but now is the time to take property from the landlords and prevent it from being swallowed up by gentrifying forces. Now is the time to form a relationship with this land that honors those who've lived on it for millennia. Now is the time to radically rethink what it means to occupy a space.

If you can't donate, please spread through your networks, follow us on social media, and get the word out.
