Marin Coast Miwok of Southern Project
Mission
The present day Coast Miwok of Marin uplifts, supports and makes visible the Indigenous peoples of Past, present and future of Marin by offering authentic educational writings of history and linking people to cultural resources in Marin and even the greater Bay Area.
The Coast Miwok people have cared for the land known as Marin since time immemorial, and were/are known as peaceful, happy people. Due to enslavement, murder, forced migrations, and land theft, their numbers have dwindled.
Now, a descendant of Camillo Ynitia (1803 –1856), the last chief of inland Natives, and passionate community members seek to honor the culture, history and legacy by installing a statue of a Coast Miwok Dancer. Dancers are significant in Coast Miwok culture as culture-keepers and healers. No similar statue exists in Marin that shares and that highlight Indigenous Peoples of Marin Native Americans.
Coast Miwok of Southern Marin Project hope to inspire people, younger and older, locals and tourists to go and seek information about the cultural ways of the Coast Miwok People of Marin, past and present-day!
Coast Miwok of Marin Project, Tribal Council as well, hosts a few web places that constantly post pictures, stories of customs and traditional ways. Some of the Coast Miwok heritage has been swept under the carpet. We host Zoom gatherings, in-person gatherings, and cultural events that uplift Indigenous Culture of Marin and and bring connection to the Native descendants and the current residents of Northern California. Our events offer opportunities for Indigenous Peoples to share their traditional ways and arts with their community and the greater Bay Area. Our Native Brothers in the Coast Miwok Tribal Council Of Marin, are bringing the knowledge of the culture and heritage to the present day residents in Marin and all that are interested, Keeping the Coast Miwok heritage Alive! We * Are * Still * Here *
Mu'k-'am Ka ‘I-ni’iko: We are all family.
