As many of my close friends and family know, I am in school to be a pediatric nurse practitioner and my future career goals involve working in low income areas across the United States to better serve children who are at risk of serious disease. I started to harbor this passion when I was early in my healthcare career, providing my services to volunteer for medical camps for children across Ohio, such as Fresh Air Camp and Flying Horse Farms.
That is why when I heard about Buckeyes Without Borders, an Ohio State organization that partners with Shoulder to Shoulder to provide medical volunteers over spring break, I knew I wanted to apply.
Shoulder To Shoulder is a non-profit, non-governmental agency that provides free and accessible healthcare to the families in and around Intibuca, Honduras. Shoulder to Shoulder provides medical, dental, and community health programs to this area and all physicians, pharmacists, dentists, and other medical staff are there as 100% volunteers.
Ohio State University and Buckeyes Without Borders takes a variety of pharmacy, nursing, and physical therapy students to Honduras every year through their organization. I am so thrilled to have been selected for this opportunity! As a part of this volunteering opportunity, participants have been tasked with raising the required funds for the trip, a total of just over $2000 to cover travel expenses, safe lodging and travel, food, clean drinking water, among other necessities.
We plan on seeing anywhere between 500-1,000 patients throughout the week that I will be in Santa Lucia. There will be a team of about 20 volunteers who will be solely running the clinic for 40-60 hours Monday through Friday. It will be hard and exhausting, but exciting and rewarding. By supporting this trip you will be supporting a vision that includes fair and accessible healthcare for all people, regardless of their circumstance.
