My 47th marathon takes me to the Isle of Wight. This week’s run is for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) in Australia, a charity funding world-class research to stop breast cancer in its tracks.

What is the struggle?

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women worldwide, including in Oceania. In Australia alone, it’s estimated that 1 in 7 women will face breast cancer in their lifetime. While survival rates have improved over the years, far too many lives are still being lost. Beyond the statistics are mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends whose worlds are turned upside down by diagnosis, treatment, and the fear of recurrence.

Why am I running for this cause?

Because breast cancer touches so many lives. I’ve seen the strength of families walking through it, and the heartbreak it causes, with one of the most important people in my life, being indescribably affected by this horrible disease. Running for NBCF is my way of helping to push towards a future where no life is cut short by this disease—a future where research delivers prevention, better treatments, and ultimately, a cure. For Christine, Kelsey, their family, their friends, and anyone else whoever has to face such problems.
