MARATHON NO.25; DEVON FOR AGE UK WYVERN
Donation protected
Marathon 25 brings me to the city of Exeter, in the landscapes of Devon. This week, I’m proud to be running in support of The Age UK Wyvern Group, an incredible organisation that strengthens the backbone of our communities—support groups for the elderly, locally to my grandparents’ home of Herefordshire and Worcester.
What are Support Groups and Why Do They Matter?
Support groups are often the first lifeline people reach for when life becomes overwhelming, especially for the elderly, where life can feel isolating. Whether it’s dealing with chronic illness, loss, mental health struggles, or a life-changing diagnosis, support groups offer a sense of connection and belonging when everything else feels uncertain. They aren’t just about talking—they’re about building resilience, sharing tools, and meeting new faces which can do wonders for mental health.
Why am I Running for UK Support Groups?
These groups can be the only consistent support some people have. But they’re often underfunded, under-recognised, and entirely volunteer-run. I’m running this marathon to shine a light on the quiet champions holding these spaces—and to ensure they get the resources they need to keep going.
What is The Age UK Wyvern and What Do They Do?
The Wyvern Group supports a network of local support groups across the UK. Their work ranges from training volunteers and facilitators to providing safe spaces, materials, and outreach for those in crisis. Whether someone is facing grief, chronic illness, or emotional trauma, Wyvern helps ensure there’s a group, a guide, and a community ready to meet them where they are. Their ethos is simple: no one should have to face life alone.
How The Wyvern Group Helps (and What Your Donation Can Do)
• £10 funds a starter pack for a new support group facilitator.
• £25 helps train volunteers in active listening and safeguarding.
• £50 supports group meetings with materials, refreshments, and venue hire.
• £100 funds outreach for isolated individuals to find and access local support.
Crossing the halfway mark of this 52-marathon challenge in Exeter is a powerful milestone—but it’s the stories behind the steps that keep me going. This week, I’m running for every person who’s ever walked into a room needing support—and found it. Please consider donating to The Wyvern Group. Because no one should ever have to go through life’s hardest moments alone.
