MARATHON NO.2; LEICESTERSHIRE FOR TELL MAMA

The 2nd marathon on the list will be running for Tell MAMA in Leicestershire on the 11th January, running against religious discrimination.

Tell MAMA is a charity that’s doing amazing work fighting against Islamophobia and all forms of religious discrimination.

In 2024 there were shocking riots all around the country. It was supposedly about the tragic stabbing deaths of three young girls in Southport but the real story wasn’t about justice or supporting those victims. It was an excuse for far-right groups to spread hate, to blame an entire religious group for the actions of a few. People used the tragedy as an excuse to fuel Islamophobia, to spread the idea that Muslims don’t belong in our country.

Muslims play a huge role in UK society. They work in hospitals, schools, businesses – they’re our doctors, teachers, neighbours. They’re part of the fabric that makes this country great. The Muslim community in the UK is crucial to the fabric of our society with 6.3% of the UK’s population being Muslim, and they make major contributions in every sector, from healthcare to education, to business. Let’s be clear – without Muslims, the UK would be a much poorer place. So don’t let hate-mongers make you think otherwise. To say they don’t belong here, that they don’t deserve to live in peace, is wrong.

This isn't just about Muslims – it’s about all religious discrimination. The hate we saw in those riots is one example of something much bigger that’s happening in the world today. Religious discrimination, no matter who it’s against, is never okay.

Tell MAMA is the charity that’s tackling this head-on. They provide support for victims of anti-Muslim hate crimes, work to change the narrative around Muslims and fight for a more inclusive society. They help victims of hate crimes feel safe and heard, and they work to change the way we all view religious tolerance.

Leicester is the perfect place to run for this cause. The city is one of the most diverse in the UK, with over one-third of the population identifying as South Asian, and a significant percentage of those being Muslim. Leicester shows us how powerful diversity can be when people come together.

This run is for everyone who has been hurt by discrimination. It’s for the victims of hate, for the people who are silenced, for anyone who’s ever felt like they don’t belong because of their faith. We can’t change the past, but we can create a better future – a future where people like Tommy Robinson, Nigel Farage, and everyone else who stirred up hatred shush their mouths.
